Technological Studies

The Technology Department is where students learn by jumping in, getting hands-on, and creating real projects that bring learning to life. From building and designing to coding and fixing engines, students use real tools, real equipment, and real problem solving to master practical skills. 

Every tech class at Tommy Douglas is active and exciting, giving students the chance to experiment, explore ideas, and see their work take shape right in front of them. By learning through doing, students gain confidence, discover new abilities, and open the door to future pathways!

Make cool stuff with media you already use!
This course is perfect if you like taking photos, making videos, designing things, or just want to try something creative and fun. You’ll learn how to use apps and tools to edit photos, design graphics, and shoot short videos - just like the stuff you see online every day.  We’ll explore careers in several media fields such as photography, graphic design and digital filmmaking while using cameras, lighting, and editing software to help you turn simple ideas into cool projects. You’ll work with friends, try new things, and get to create content you’re proud of.  No experience needed - if you’ve ever used a phone, you’ve already got what it takes to do well here. It’s hands-on, fun, and a great way to build future career skills while being creative.

In this course, you’ll get hands-on experience learning the basics of construction, electricity, and plumbing. This is the course for anyone who loves to create - whether it’s snapping pics on your phone, editing short videos for social media, or sketching out logos and designs. You’ll level up those skills using the same tools the pros use in graphic design, photography, filmmaking, and web design.  We’ll take the apps you already know and love - and show you how to do more with them. You’ll also get to try out cameras, lighting gear, and editing software used in real media jobs. Every project is hands-on and helps you build a portfolio of cool, creative work.  Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before. Take Your Building Skills to the Next Level!
Already know the basics? This course takes what you learned before and steps it up a notch! You’ll dive deeper into the world of construction and home renovation, learning how real homes are improved and upgraded. We’ll explore different types of plumbing systems like copper and PEX, and get hands-on with the basics of drywall cutting, installing, and finishing it yourself. This course gives you a deeper understanding of how homes are built and renovated, and it’s a great way to see if you enjoy working with your hands and solving real-world building challenges.

Dive into hands-on medicine and healthcare!
This hands-on course introduces students to the exciting world of health care. Students will explore human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and infection control practices while working with real medical equipment such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, thermometers and surgical tools. Through engaging labs, students will measure vital signs, operate hospital beds, transfer patients using lifts and wheelchairs, and even perform an ‘open-heart surgery’ to understand how the circulatory system and medical teams function. In this course, you’ll apply the design process to real-world challenges, creating detailed technical drawings, elevations, and professional interior design models. Dive deeper into healthcare science!
This hands-on course immerses students in the skills, science, and ethics of modern medicine. Students will learn to take vital signs, perform CPR and first aid, respond to mock emergencies, and safely administer medications, injections, and IVs. Through labs and investigations - including the dissection of an eyeball - they will explore microorganisms, vaccines, antibiotics, and disease outbreaks. The course also examines legislation, bioethics, transplants, and organ and blood donation, along with current issues such as the opioid crisis and its effects on healthcare. Students will develop the technical competence and ethical awareness needed for future careers in health and wellness.
