Personalized Alternative Education Department

The students in the Personalized Alternative Education Department enjoyed an amazing workshop with Juno Award-nominated songwriter and philanthropist Glenn Marais on Monday, June 1st. Students participated in a drum circle, learning about the principle of "ubuntu" - an ancient worldview originating in Africa highlighting our interconnectedness and the importance of compassion and community.  The word can be translated as "I am because we are."

Students used breathwork and the power of rhythm to work together, and to connect with their own bodies, minds, and voices.  They expressed themselves in writing, to share their ideas about their lived experiences and the world around them, and together created and recorded a song - a feat many thought impossible in the time we had.  Students were able to interact in new and challenging ways, expanding their sense of agency and learning about themselves and each other.  What a spectacular experience! Thank you to Glenn Marais and to our students for bringing all of themselves to our workshop.

A Peak Inside: Visual Arts

Students in Ms. La Porta's Gr. 11 Drawing & Painting class are painting up a storm! They were asked to research an Impressionist or Post-Impressionist artist and create a small painting utilizing their chosen Artist’s style and technique. Each student shared their learning, and painting sample, with the class in a collaborative presentation/gallery walk. They were then asked to choose a different artist–one that stood out to them from the gallery walk– Ms. La Porta and her students are very proud of!
